Over the past week a lot of people that I know have nailed their flag to the pole over the row between Shilpa Shetty and Jade Goodie.
I do not want to be outspoken or point fingers or sit on the fence, but I do have an opinion.
Jade is reflective of a generation of white girls brought up with little or no money that have been thrust into the lime-light. Had she said the comments she has made recently down 'the local' amongst her own, nothing would have been said, but to air them in front of millions of TV viewers is improper. She is a no-brainer that opens her mouth and proceeds to eat foot.
Sadly the world will reflect her views as those of the British Nation, that we are a land of bigots.
In the past it we have been dismissive enough to except her stupid rants and raves as 'good TV’, but now TV companies have to be accountable for the behaviour of 'guests' they invite to participate in such reality programs.
Shilpa on the other hand for all her beauty, comes over very naïve. She comes from an environment where she is feted as ‘Bollywood Royalty’. Where she is venerated and treated with the utmost respect. To be thrust into an environment where she has to come down to the gutter level of Jade Goodie is wrong. The nearest equivalent that I can think of is when the poor Asian lad was put in the cell of the racist at Feltham Prison.
She has held her very dignified head high throughout the onslaught of ‘motor mouth’ Jade and her cronies.
It is about time we accepted in this country that shouting something at ‘Johnnie Foreigner’ doesn’t make them understand. That understanding a person’s culture doesn’t simply mean having a curry or wearing a sarong.
We are all guilty in some way or another of being institutionally racist. We watch adverts about banks proudly telling their customers that their call centres are in Britain. But also we can heighten awareness of our own failings by creating racist tension through being overly cautious. Like our insistence to drop anything in common use that has the word black in the title, like blackboard for instance.
On Friday we will see reflectively how ‘racist’ this country really is when the results of the eviction are announced. God forbid that Jade fails to be evicted, as it will herald to the world totally the wrong message about Britain as a whole.
