Reports in today’s news of the £1.14 billion overrun of costs on Government IT projects which have a cumulative 84 years tardiness.

Lib Dem Treasury spokesman Jeremy Browne raised serious questions about the Government's ineptitude saying "This Government's record on IT is lamentable," he said. "Time and time again it wastes millions of pounds of taxpayers' money on IT projects which are delayed, ineffectual and over budget".

Being 'in the know' I can say what the Government has to do is look at the way a lot of these projects are run.
My understanding for the main cause for delay is the use of sub-contracted staff on extortionate wages that are not pushed to complete a project as that would mean a termination of their contract. The longer they keep a project running the more money they make.

This Government has severely eroded the Civil Service staffing, replacing them with temporary staff on twice (or not more) wages, who lack commitment to the job at hand. It is about time (in these financial strapped times) that they looked within and promote/develop staff with skills that could be far better used.
