well what did you expect from 'a mongrel race that has developed through co-operation' - is it really sad news? our ancestors never had bananas, or potatoes for that matter...

I'll try again....dammit...typos! Sorry.
Tax cuts do nothing except allow poor people to play catch-up after their wages have fallen so far behind the higher paid, so the benefit is zero because nobody will spend anymore, they just put it towards the things they struggled to afford before tax cuts.

Couldn't agree more - I was saying just the same thing to someone here a few days ago.
Time to remember that endless consumption of cheap plastic or polyester tat from China is no substitute for true happiness, which I find comes from much more basic things - company of friends, country walks, community events etc.

I agree. I grew up in the seventies, when ice on the inside of windows wasn't uncommon. As a society we are so much more affluent nowadays, but are we any happier? Doesn't look like it.
I was listening to someone moaning abpout heating bills a couple of days ago. She was walking around her house in a t-shirt, heating on.

Thanks for the support - I am sure most of my colleagues would agree that we hated to strike, but we have been pushed into a corner over the years and things simply came to a head. In terms of wasting public money, the Northern Rock fiasco would be hard to top, but I (a Labour voter) would put nothing past this mob!

I agree entirely. As a freelancer, I'm still getting the same hourly rate as I have for about 5 years, and the price of essentials has gone up hugely this year. Every time I go into the shop, some item of food has gone up a few pence - and the sell-by bread (a useful staple for bread and butter pudding, french toast, and for the birds) is now more more…

Hmm, why am I feeling guilty for my working tax credit now? no I shall not! I is technically //poor//! ok so my outgoings are minimal and have been brought up to be super thrifty and tightfisted, so even tho my wages are in the uber crappo region I actually have a couple of hundred quid spare every month, good thing too!

where do you want me to start?! we prioritise all the wrong things in our society (wars, security, crime) and neglect all the really important ones (poverty, equality, environment). second we all expect something for nothing and successive governments are hamstrung by a failure to convince the populace of the need to redistribute wealth fairly.

The problem is your last question: if we kick this lot out - will the others be any better? It's easy to make promises in Opposition that you suddenly find it is inconvenient to keep once elected.
Perhaps it's my age, but I find the whole political scene utterly dispiriting. more…

I heard a long interview with two horribly disabled soldiers on the radio a few days ago. The situation is appalling and makes me ashamed for the MOD.

Do you mean a legal right to bear arms rather than being granted it as a special privilege, or a high proportion of gun murders?
